By D Smith Do you have days where nothing can make you happy? You are not alone. I ignored my depressive thoughts about life for years. Unfortunately I didn’t do anything to fix my situation until they became so dehabilitating that I had no choice. Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. In a given year, an estimated 22.1% of Americans aged 18 and older (about 1 in 5 adults) suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder. According to the 1998 United States Census population estimate, this figure translates to 44.3 million people! In addition, 4 of the 10 leading causes of disability in the U.S. and other developed countries are mental disorders, with major depression being the leading cause of disability. It is estimated that depression alone will occur in approximately 18.8 million American adults, or about 9.5% of the United States population aged 18 or above. If you are a woman, you are twice as likely than a man (12% vs. 6.6%) to be affected by depression each year. My symptoms of depression started with an occasional case of the blahs. I was able to cope with them for a long time. I thought that since this happens to a lot of people, that it would pass and I didn’t need to worry. I didn’t think about finding out why it was happening. Besides, after a few drinks I always felt much better. I later learned that depressive disorders commonly occur with substance abuse… So what is the cause of all of this sadness in our society? Speaking from experience, I wasn’t happy with my life and the direction it was taking me. I would look back at a past week and not be able to recall one thing that I enjoyed. It was a blur. Nor would I look forward to the coming weeks ahead. All I saw were potential stresses that were going to present themselves. But I didn’t do anything about it. I accepted that this was life. Looking back I don’t know how I could have ever believed this. When we are suffering from depression, it seems that we lose our objectivity. Does thinking that we have nothing to look forward to sound rational to you? Where did my enjoyment in life disappear to? It was my perception of the world that had slowly changed and I was unable to see it because of the control that my depression had over me. In the fast pace of today’s world we often don’t allow ourselves time to evaluate our lives and set goals to realize our ambitions. By Janice Elizabeth Small If you had a dog and didn’t treat it well - you starved it on some days, overfed it on others, gave it far too many doggie treats and not enough doggie nourishment or water, kept it indoors in front of the TV and gave it no exercise, berated it for being lazy and fat - how would you feel about yourself as a dog owner? Would you say you were negligent? Would you expect the animal welfare people to be keeping an eye on you? You’d feel bad about that, right? But when it comes to you, how do you treat yourself? With the right dieting and discipline, it can be done. Here are a few smart dieting secrets to help you achieve an ideal weight. Start your diet with a food diary, record everything you eat, what you were doing at the time and how you felt. That helps you gain insight about yourself, your temptation, the emotional states that encourage you to snack. Instead of eating the forbidden piece of candy, brush your teeth. If you’re about to cheat, allow yourself a treat, then eat only half a bite and throw the other half away. When hunger hits, wait 10 minutes before eating and see if it passes. Set attainable goals. Don’t say, “I want to lose 50 pounds.” Say, “I want to lose 5 pounds a month.” Get enough sleep but not too much. Try to avoid sugar. Highly sweetened foods tend to make you crave more. Drink six to eight glasses of water a day. Water itself helps cut down on water retention because it acts as a diuretic. Taken before meals, it dulls the appetite by giving you that “full feeling.” Diet with a friend. There is strength in numbers. Support groups are important, and caring people can help one another succeed. Start your own, even with just one other person. Substitute activity for eating. Write down everything you eat - - everything - including what you taste when you cook. If you monitor what you eat, you can’t go off your diet. Weigh yourself once a week at the same time. Your weight fluctuates constantly and you can weigh more at night than you did in the morning, a downer if you stuck to your diet all day. Make dining an event. Eat from your own special plate, on your own special placemat. Borrow the Japanese art of food arranging to make your meal, no matter how meager, look lovely. Make eating some kind of a ceremony. This will lessen the habit of automated eating. This is a trick that helps chronic over-eaters and bingers pay attention to their food instead of consuming it unconsciously. Don’t shop when you’re hungry. You’ll only buy more fattening food. Avoid finger foods that are easy to eat in large amounts. Avoid consuming large quantities of fattening liquids, which are so easy to overdo. And this includes alcoholic beverages. Keep plenty of crunchy foods like raw vegetables and air-popped fat-free popcorn on hand. They’re high in fiber, satisfying and filling. Leave something on your plate, even if you are a charter member of the Clean The Plate Club. It’s a good sign that you can stop eating when you want to, not just when your plate is empty. Lose weight for yourself, not to please your husband, your parents or your friends. Make the kitchen off-limits at any time other than mealtime. By Mark Bojovic Between Thanksgiving and the New Year, people can expect to gain up to 9 pounds if additional weight. It’s because they did a lot of muscle building workouts, rather they fed their appetites with the fully available foods. We’re talking about the multiple servings at Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving leftovers, the Christmas office party, other function holiday parties, getting together with friends, staying indoors more, the Christmas Eve party, Christmas day party, the days off doing nothing, new years party, new years drinking, and some more days off doing nothing. What a terrible thing to be doing to our bodies! We are literally heaping junk on top of junk on our bodies and expect to have a newfound ambitious goal to lose it all off in the next month. Yeah, and my name is Oprah. You can, however, help maintain your physiological sanity by making decisions today that will keep you motivated for the next month. I can testify that these past two days have been great. I started my 31-day challenge yesterday morning and have logged in two GREAT clean eating days with three cardio sessions. I would not have done this if I didn’t start my “31-Day Challenge.” It was something that I conjured out of thin air, yet it was something I decided to do and am staying accountable to everyone I have told (i.e. you, too!). So think about where your biggest enemy lies in this next month. Is it that rum cake on Christmas day (where you usually can’t stop eating it). Or is it simply grazing on everything you see at every party you go to? Whatever it is, call it out, look it straight in the eye, decide you will not be subdued by it until next year (next month), and believe it. Not only that, but tell others about it. Tell yourself about it every day. I have made a decision to tell others about this 31-day challenge daily so that it is fresh on my mind, even amidst temptation and late night cravings. Everything starts in the mind. All of your spoken words, actions you carried out, and what your eyes see. I’ll even include what you hear, because you can hear and not listen… :) So if you’re ready to avoid the dreaded weight gain this holiday season, take these action steps: 1. Decide that which is your worst eating habit for the next month2. Decide to not have any of it for the next month3. Come up with a name for this new decision (i.e. “31-Day Challenge” works fine)4. Tell others about your new decision, but call it by the “special” name so it sounds official and interesting. By Debbie LaChusa Years ago when I was looking to add new clients to my consulting practice, I had to proactively go out and seek them. The marketing strategies I used included networking and speaking engagements, along with keeping in touch with my contact list of friends and business associates in the hopes they would refer clients when appropriate. These relationship marketing efforts supported my business 100% in the early years. But, although I’m embarrassed to admit it because I should know better, when I got busy and had plenty of client work, I fell off my marketing wagon. I just didn’t have the time. Or, I guess one could argue, I just didn’t make the time to keep up my proactive marketing efforts. So what happened if I lost a client or two, and suddenly needed more work? I’d have to quickly rev-up my marketing in the hopes I could generate more work in a short amount of time. Not an ideal scenario by any stretch. But it’s also pretty typical, especially for independent service professionals. Then, several years ago, I discovered attraction marketing. With attraction marketing you attract qualified leads TO your business so you don’t have to go out chasing them. You forget about “selling” and you focus on “serving.” And just like a magnet, you start attracting prospects and clients. They see you or hear you or read something you’ve written and if it resonates with a problem or need they have, they come to you. Can you imagine what it would be like to have potential clients emailing you, calling you and visiting your web site all on their own? Instead of you having to track them down and convince them to call, email or visit your website? That’s attraction marketing.
