Dead Sea Minerals - Health from the Lowest Point on Earth

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Yoav Cohen A study involving a European occupational therapist suffering from psoriasis who had obtained compensation from her health insurance in order to undergo therapy at the Dead Sea has lead to great interest in health funds in Denmark, Germany and other European Countries. This has resulted in their subsidizing treatment from the Dead Sea for people suffering from both Psoriasis and other skin conditions. If Health Insurance companies can be considering coverage of treatment at the Dead Sea for relief and treatment of skin disorders, then it seems reasonable to advocate usage of products manufactured from the Mud and minerals of the Dead Sea. Healthy skin and Assisting to replace or remove electrolytes enables the body to maintain a good fluid balance thereby improving a feeling of relaxation, health and well being. Below is a list of the therapeutic physical and mental well being is dependent on the correct sodium and potassium or fluid balance in the body. This is regulated by the Adrenal gland, which in turn affect healthy function of the kidneys. The kidneys are responsible for controlling 28 chemicals in the body. An imbalance of these chemicals or electrolytes can result in certain skin or other symptoms and over an extended period of time results in various illnesses. benefits of the Dead Sea products together with the conditions or symptoms they alleviate. The Dead Sea Salts differ from regular sea salt in 2 important ways. 1) They contain 10 times more minerals than sea salt. 2) The Dead Sea salts absorb essential oils with ease, which enables them to be released into the bath water as they dissolve. This is beneficial for those wishing to benefit from the Dead Sea in the privacy of their own home. Some of the minerals found in the Dead Sea are listed below together with their functions or benefits to health. This provides some insight as to why these minerals assist in cleansing, de-toxing and restoring a healthy status quo of the body, especially the skin and muscles. Minerals and Chemicals found in the Dead Sea Sulfur-is found in the amino acids cysteine, and methionine; as well as in cells, hemoglobin (of the blood), collagen (of the muscles), keratin (required for skin), insulin, heparin, biotin, co-enzyme A, (required for healthy hair, skin, nails, among many other biological structures). Sulfur is necessary for synthesizing collagen. It is required for the adequate digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and a number of vitamins e.g. thiamin, biotin and pantothenic acid; It is also essential to enable cells to breatheSulfur is necessary for the secretion of bile from the liver and for converting toxins into non-toxins. Chlorine is necessary to maintain the correct balance of alkaline and acid in the body, together with being vital for cell metabolism Iodine is necessary for the production of the hormone thyroxin, and is also vital for both energy and cell metabolism is necessary to maintain the water balance in order for cell metabolism to take place, assisting the cells to absorb nourishment and expel waste products. An imbalance in potassium often leads to water retention. Potassium also plays a vital role in regulating muscle contractions and the nervous system. Sodiumlike potassium plays s a vital role in assisting the cells to absorb nourishment and expel waste. Calciumis necessary in strengthening cell membranes and cleansing the pores. In addition it is vital for production and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones, together with regulating the heart muscles and nerves. Magnesiumis necessary in assisting the body to utilize other essential nutiens and in cell metabolism. Bromine helps with the natural repair of the body together with cell metabolism and can be sued as a natural antibiotic.Saunas often use Dead Sea salts to evaporate the bromides thus creating and environment similar to the Dead Sea. Having a hot bath with Dead Sea salts and allowing the steam to collect in the bathroom will have a similar effect. Other than the benefits listed below for bath salts, steaming and using these salts in the bath can be beneficial for respiratory conditions e.g. asthma. PELOTHERAPYThe main healing property of mud is humic acid, which comes from concentration of organic matter. After the Ice Age the earth experienced a compression of plant and animal life resulting in transformation of various rocks and hence, muds. The parts of the earth, which suffered the most erosion, have higher deposits of humic acid. One of these areas is the Dead Sea, which has the largest concentration of humic acid, chloride salts of magnesium, sodium, potassium, calcium, bromine and various other minerals. Since the Dead Sea Mud (also known as Pelloid) has a high concentration of minerals together with an ability to hold heat, the mud can be used for certain healing benefits. Smearing the Pelloid onto the body in a process known as Pelotherapy provides cleansing and detoxing of the skin which has proved beneficial for skin, muscle pain and arthritic or rheumatic conditions. BALNEOTHERAPY Is an ancient healing form using water, usually with added salts, thereby distinguishing it from hydrotherapy, to condition, relax and revitalize the skin, body and muscles. Its benefits are seen in improving circulation, strengthening the immune system, reducing pain, stress and insomnia. Yoav Cohen is an author for AHAVA Dead Sea products site. Healthy Weight Loss

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Ken Black The most successful, healthy weight-loss plans will require you to eat healthier and do regular exercise to help you lose weight and maintain your new figure. Supplements, diet pills, eating plans and exercise equipment on their own wont help you lose weight and keep it off long-term, unless you are dedicated to changing your lifestyle for the better. According to the American Obesity Association, by losing a small amount of weight - around 5 10% of your initial weight - you can reduce the risk of serious health problems like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure arthritis, respiratory disease and even some forms of cancer. Just imagine losing even more weight than this. The benefits and change in your life would be dramatic. But, how do you lose weight the healthy way and benefit from all the health related changes that come with losing weight the best way? Weight-loss Programs (diets) Healthy weight-loss programs combine eating nutritional foods with regular exercise to help encourage the body to convert stored fat in the body into glucose to act as fuel, so you are not only losing weight, you have more energy. Often, people get into the bad habit of yo-yo dieting, which is the act of losing weight, then gaining it right back and then start dieting again. By learning a healthy, easy-to-stick eating and exercise plan over a traditional diet, you will not only lose weight the healthy way, you will notice a raise in self-esteem, improved health and learn to keep weight off long term. The only way that the body can lose weight is to burn more calories than your body is taking in. Dont make the mistake of thinking that just because you need to eat fewer calories, you have to eat less food. Healthy eating plans are all about educating yourself on which foods can be eaten in large amounts and which foods must only be eaten in small portions. But, most of all, it is important to remember that when you are losing weight the healthy way, you never need to starve yourself or go hungry. You just need to learn what different foods do to the body. Some very popular diets these days are the South Beach Diet, the Mayo Clinic Diet and the Cabbage soup diet. Weight-loss Supplements There are many supplements available for those who are changing to a healthier lifestyle and want to have some extra nutrition or want a little help along the way. Just remember that no matter how good a supplement is, it will not take the place of proper nutrition and exercise. Diet pills are made to complement your weight loss goals while using a logical eating plan, as well as regular activity. Vitamin and mineral supplements have become popular over the years to help our bodies get the vitamins and minerals that are lacking in the soil our foods are grown in. Many vitamins and minerals are great complimentary practices and will help to give you energy and an overall feeling of well being, as well as assist in the shedding pounds process. Some well known diet pills are Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) pills, Phentermine (prescription), and Hoodia Gordonii. A word of caution, before taking any supplement, make sure that you read the label carefully and speak to your doctor first if you are currently on any medications or suffer from any illnesses. In Training For An Eternity In Heaven

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Terry Weber Back in 1945, when I was 17 years old and fresh out of high school, I realized one of my life-long dreams, I volunteered to join the United States Navy. I was sent to Bainbridge, Maryland for my boot camp training. One of the first things to happen after being sworn in was, they shaved my head and I was told I was now a brand new USN skinhead with the name: Apprentice Seaman Weber, USN, 247-92-70. I won’t go into the details of the 20 weeks of, drill, discipline and other training I got while in boot camp. But, at the end of the training I graduated as Seaman First Class. Then all my shipmates, and I were given orders to move out and take our places on ships, airfields or in a number of different Navy schools for more specialized job training. I’ve learned, since then, all of the basics I was taught back then, in boot camp, were directly related to my future duties, assignments and behavior as a sailor in the USN. In boot camp I was taught all I needed to know, to be a good shipmate, to follow orders without question and to accept both the responsibilities and the privileges of one who for the next three years, would serve his country with enthusiasm and pride. When I volunteered to join the Navy I did it with great expectations of new adventures, world travel and valuable service to my country. I was not disappointed. While still in the Navy I volunteered to become a Christian and in that way I joined the worldwide fellowship of Christians. That’s when I found myself back in a new kind of boot camp! I had much to learn about what it means to both follow and take orders from Jesus. I learned that Jesus has rules and regulations, just as the Navy has rules and regulations. Today, as I look back over the last sixty-some years as a Christian, I must say I’ve done the best I could to avoid breaking the rules of my Lord. During all of that time I’ve learned this: Jesus is a patient, forgiving mentor, commander and teacher. Even so, I am sure there must have been many times when Jesus thought to himself, this Weber guy might never learn the simple basics of a Christian lifestylehe may never graduate from my boot camp! Even so, I’m happy to say, down through the years Jesus never gave up on me, I never stopped trying to learn his ways. In fact, he is still gently working with, correcting and guiding me. But, I must say, the basic boot camp kind of training he’s taught me over the years has finally become a permanent part of my personality, thinking and behavior. Perhaps the graduation day for all Christians from this life’s boot camp style training will be when we leave this life. That’s when we’ll get our orders to move out. In fact, according to the Bible, our Christian orders have already been written. You see, I’ve read those orders and I know they tell us to report for duty in Heaven. When we arrive there Jesus, who knows our individual talents so intimately, will command us to come alongside and rule there with him. That’s when he will expect us to make use of all that he taught us during those difficult, and often exciting boot camp days of our lives on earth. That’s when we will understand more fully that during our entire lives Jesus has had us in training for the excitement, adventure and joy of an eternity in Heaven with him. www.originalsbyweber.com Terry Weber is a retired advertising/direct mail sales letter copywriter and inventor of several useful items. From Looking Tired and Cranky to Young and Vibrant

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Sara Goldstein Frown lines and a drooping or wrinkled brow can make a person look angry, tired or even sad. These signs of aging can also make someone appear much older than he or she actually is, and can result in someone being misinterpreted or misjudged. For all of these reasons, many people elect to have browlift surgery. Many of my younger to middle-aged patients have elected to have browlift procedures done, says Dr. Miguel Delgado, a San Francisco-based cosmetic surgeon. When the brow region of the face starts changing more rapidly than the rest, many patients are uncomfortable and unhappy with the way it makes them appear. The browlift is a great and easy solution to fix this. Browlift surgery is performed by making several small incisions and then navigated using an endoscope. This procedure is less invasive than the old way of making an incision from ear to ear, and helps limit scarring and recovery time. The incisions are used to tightened the skin and the muscles of the forehead and bring the eyebrows up to a natural-looking, fixed level. The results of a browlift can be very uplifting for many patients. Their tired, sad or angry look is transformed into a younger, vibrant and energetic look that is more consistent with the patients age and how he or she feels. The browlift can also be coupled with additional cosmetic surgery options such as the eyelid lift and facelift to further enhance youthfulness and overall appearance. Why Can’t Johnny Problem Solve

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By Ann LaRoche You have heard the expression He has a lot of book knowledge, but not much commonsense. What is commonsense? I think it is the ability to reason something out, to problem solve. This problem solving ability has nothing to do with how much you know. It does have everything to do with the mental connections you make with the information you know. I have been thinking a lot lately of math anxiety. Math anxiety is a block to effective problem solving using numbers. Take for instance this example. I have a BA in Mathematics. I can factor polynomials in my sleep. I can find the first, second and third derivation of a complex quadratic formula, but I couldnt solve this simple math problem. The answer eluded me. The problem was this. Eight of us were taking a boat trip for three days. I had to buy enough loaves of sliced bread for sandwiches for the eight of us for three lunches. Assuming 1 sandwiches per person I calculated that I needed 72 slices of bread. But how many loaves of bread did I need? I was stumped. What was the ratio of slices to loaf? Finally, my friend suggested that I just count the number of slices of bread in the loaf I was interested in buying and then I could figure out how many loaves I needed. Count the slices in the loaf! It seemed too obvious. Of course it worked, but how come that did not dawn on me? I have too much book knowledge and not enough problem solving. When I learned math or in this case word problems, I was always given all the information I needed and precise instructions on where to plug in the numbers in the formula in order to solve the problem. Math became rote, plug the numbers into the formula and, Voila! there is your answer. Real life doesnt work that way. I was missing a piece of the puzzle. It did not dawn on me that I would have to supply the missing piece myself. Now lets look at math in elementary school. First, we are lead to believe there is only one way to solve a problem. If we venture to solve it another way, right or wrong, the answer is wrong because we didnt do the problem the way the book said to. One day I was in a multiple learning styles class. We were required to figure out how many steps two people would each need to take to be back in sync on the same foot, given that one persons stride was 2/3 the other person’s stride. Because it was not a math class and we were not given the formula to figure it out, we saw numerous ways to solve this problem. Some people stood up and paced it off with a friend. Some drew a picture. Others stared at the tiled ceiling. Someone was even beating a rhythm. Eventually everyone who attempted to solve the problem came up with the correct answer. The only ones in the group who did not get an answer were those who were stumped because they didnt know the formula. No one told them how to solve the problem, so they could not solve it. They didnt know how to start. Second, we are lead to believe that there is only one right answer. This is not necessarily correct. There exists different numbers that have the same value like and 2/4. Both mean but how many times has 2/4 been marked wrong just because the answer sheet stated that the answer was . Sometimes the correct answer can be a close estimate. For instance one third of 1 1/3 is equal to 4/9. Thats the correct answer. But if I was making one third of a cake recipe that called for 1 1/3 cups, I would just use a cup. It is close enough. Besides my measuring cups do not have measures for 1/9 cup. How do I know that cup is close enough because half of 9 is equal to 4.5? The next closest measure is 1/3 cup and thats only 3/9. You decide. Which is closer to 4/9, 1/3 or 1/2? Remember, were only making cake. Now how many people would have been stopped from making the cake because of the fraction calculation? How many would have been stopped because they could not measure accurately 4/9 cup? Of course, if I was measuring an explosive and a drug, I might want to be a little more accurate. But we are talking cake here, not rocket science. Last, we are lead to believe that life will give us all the information well need to solve the problem. That isnt necessarily correct either. Sometimes we have to get the numbers for ourselves or make a best guess. For my loaf problem above, I could have estimated 30 slices per loaf. Then I would have needed to buy bread with at least thirty slices per loaf or I would have needed to recalculate the numbers of loaves based on the actually slices per loaf. Of course the calculation is pretty straight forward. But what if I had wanted to serve different breads for each lunch? What if the different bread required that I allot two sandwiches per person? All these factors can affect the calculation. But how many people are stumped by problems like this everyday? How many people willingly state that theyre no good at math and dont even try to the problem solve? Why cant Johnny problem solve? I dont think he was ever taught how. Ann LaRoche, Math Expert and Author of the book “Math Is Child’s Play.” Ann advocates learning math by playing games. Card games and board games are the fun and easy way to strengthen math skills and improve problem solving capabilities. In her book, Ann debunks common math myths, addresses math anxiety, and gives practical advice to parents who want to help their child with math but feel unable or unqualified. Ann sheds light on the confusion wrought by New Math and has a process for handling math homework time that will turn those tears of frustration into smiles of triumph. Ways To Pay For Your Master Degree - That You May Not Have Thought Of Yet

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Kristie Lorette Paying for any college education, including earning your master degree can be expensive. It is a major purchase that should be considered just like buying a house or a car. You need to comparison shop, check out the bells and whistles, and then once you choose the one you want you have, figure out how to pay for it. There are financial resources available for earning your master degree just like there are for earning an undergraduate degree. Tally up the total cost that you will need to cover to earn your master degree. Cost is a factor when making a major purchase of any kind, and an education is no exception to this rule. Just don’t let the cost alone determine your decision. Try to consider all of the factors before making a decision on which school to attend. Graduate students can apply for financial assistance that isn’t available to other types of degrees. Grants: Grants are money awards given to graduate students. These are not loans that have to be paid back. Grants are usually given based on a student’s financial need. Fellowship Awards: Fellowships are usually earned as an academic achievement award and like grants these are not loans that have to be paid back. Teaching Assistantships: Graduate teaching assistants can work in their field of study at the university in exchange for money that can be applied to their education. These are appointed positions by the university that are usually based on academic achievement. Research Assistantships: Research assistants can also work in their field of study at the university in exchange for money that can be applied to their education. These are appointed positions by the university that are usually based on academic achievement. Here are more common ways of paying for college, whether it is for earning your bachelor degree or your master degree: Save: Especially if you are planning to earn your master degree in the future, start saving money now. Put away enough money from each paycheck to ensure that you have enough put away to cover your education while you are earning your master degree. This is especially true if you are planning on returning to school full-time without working. Go part-time: Instead of completely giving up a job, take on a part-time job to cover costs while you are earning your master degree. This way you will still have some money coming in to pay for school while you are completing your course of study. Student Loans: Apply for student loans through your school financial aid office or through your local bank. Remember that you will be responsible for repaying these at a certain point after you have earned your degree, so it does create a future obligation for you. Employee Tuition Reimbursement Plan: Working professionals that are urged or required by their employer to earn their master degree can inquire with their HR department about tuition reimbursement programs offered by the company. Some companies will pay a percentage of your tuition cost based on the grades that you earn in the course. For example, if you an A they will pay 100%, 90% for a B and so forth. The catch her is that you will have to cover the cost up-front and earn a good enough grade for the company to reimburse you. Tuition reimbursement plans do not always cover books and extra fees. They simply cover the cost of tuition. Research and look into the financial aid resources that you have available to you in order for you to earn your master degree. Choose the options that are the best for you and your personal situation and then put your plan into place. After reading through some options, you may have realized you have more help than you first anticipated. Private Education — Finding the Money

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Challiner]Michael Challiner The decision to send your child to a private school is a very personal one. There are parents who make this commitment soon after, or even before, their child arrives in the world. The childs name may be put down for the parents choice of independent school. Quite often the school may be the one which a parent attended or one chosen because they wish the child to be educated according to a particular religious belief. There are also private schools catering for children with special needs as far as their education is concerned. Children with impaired hearing, problems with vision or mobility or some degree of learning disabilities are catered for. Schools are available for specially gifted children, offering training in drama, music or dance alongside a comprehensive academic curriculum. All independent schools in England and Wales are required to be registered with the Department for Education and Skills. In Scotland and Northern Ireland the registration is with the Scottish or Ireland Executives. The normal pattern of private education is kindergarten or pre-prep school from the age of four (sometimes earlier) and then on to prep school until the age of thirteen when they move into a senior independent school. Some parents choose to use independent schools for part of their childs education, combined with state schools. They may decide to send their child to a local state school for some years, before transferring him or her to a private school for their senior years. Not all parents like the idea of the large comprehensive state schools. The child may have attended, and made good progress, at a smaller village school and the change may be something which worries both parents and child. Alternatively the decision may be made to give the child a good start at a good pre-prep school and see how it goes. The cost of private education using an averagely priced pre-prep school from the age of four, through prep school and on to an independent senior school could be as much as 200,000 plus. More if a boarding school is chosen. In the case of parents who have pre-planned their childs education, it is likely that they have built provision for the costs into their budgeting and there are various products geared towards this. Many parents, disillusioned with the state sector, come more slowly to the decision to head for the private option and therefore have made no provision for the costs. In this case, unless you dip into your savings or have sufficient income, borrowing may be the only choice. There are tens of thousands of parents who are making great financial sacrifices to give their children the very best start in their education. Around a quarter of these have average, or lower, incomes and are choosing to go without holidays or other luxuries to pay school fees. There has been a notable rise in applications for personal loans to fund private education fees and it is expected that these will increase as more parents decide to invest in their childs future. Around 620,000 children are now educated in independent schools. A recent study shows that not only are private school pupils more likely to attain better results, but also to get higher-paying jobs than state school pupils who were just as able and of similar backgrounds. For all the advice you need on loans, the internet is the place to go. Here youll find advice and help and discover the best way to fund your personal investment. Unique Things to Do at the Beach

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Larry M. Lynch The beach isnt just for kids and teenagers. All the family can enjoy the shore provided, of course, there arent elbow-to-elbow tourists. You can also do more than just get a tan (or a sunburn). Get up and get active with some of these suggestions. The old favorites are always fun which is why theyre still popular. You can toss a foam rubber ball Frisbee, play with a beach ball (nice because they deflate for easy carrying and storage), go inner tube surfing (cheap and increasingly harder to get but you can also deflate them). Dont forget your sand sculpture or sand castle building tools. Here are some other suggestions to consider for enlivening your beach resort vacation. 1. Collect driftwood Especially if youre of a creative bent, this can be not only a unique, but profitable pastime as well. What figures or forms do the driftwood shapes conjure up in your mind? What might they look like when painted or polished? How might you mount or display them? 2. Collect shells Long a popular beach pastime with children and adults alike, it can still serve as an interesting activity for the kids (or you). Even more so if youre on a new, foreign or strange beach which may well offer up some unique surprises. Make a collage, a display or shadow bow of your best finds when you get back home. 3. Catch crabs and crustaceans We used to walk along in the surf of the Chesapeake Bay with a framed meter-square piece of window screen to trap all kinds of small crabs, crustaceans, sand worms and even small fish. It made for an interesting series of catches and provided endless hours of simple fun for me and my siblings. With eleven younger brothers and sisters, it also kept us out of trouble or at least reasonably so. Sometimes a fisherman would buy our catch for use as live bait, much to the profit of the local ice cream vendors. 4. Surf fishing There are all manner of collapsible of multiple piece rod and reel kits you can easily pack in a suitcase or store in a car trunk. Whip it out, local regulations and conditions permitting, and try your hand at whatever the regional waters offer. Some surprisingly large catches can be made in less than two feet of water. Just put on a snorkel and dive mask, wade out to waist-deep water, stand still for a few minutes with your face in the water. Youll often be thrilled at the number and size of the fish and other sea creatures youll see all around you below the surface. In many tropical waters, its like standing in an aquarium. 5. Catch live bait As was mentioned earlier, like bait can often be sold to local fishermen (or use it yourself). Use a cast net, walk along in knee-deep surf with an old window screen and bucket. Minnows, crustaceans, sandworms, small eels and crabs are all susceptible to this method. Be sure to check local regulations first. Keep them alive and fresh in a bucket partially filled with water. 6. Relax or get a surf massage Soak and soothe those aching bones with a relaxing massage. In numerous resort areas there are locals who offer this service right at the beach. Be sure to negotiate prices before services are rendered to avoid any price gouging. Another alternative is to let the sea and surf massage you as you lay there. Its free and the surf never gets tired or overcharges you. Sit facing the surf with your legs outstretched. Move forward until the surf covers you up to the belly button. Change positions forward, backwards or other variations as the surf changes. 7. Go walking Already identified as a best exercise activity, walking is almost always pleasant. Walking on dry sand gives you more of a workout than walking on sand that is still damp from the receded surf. For maximum huff and puff, try walking in the surf itself. A normal rate of walking is a mile and a half in fifteen minutes, so a thirty minute walk is a good workout for the day. Fifteen minutes out, fifteen minutes back to your starting point should do you nicely. 8. Nature watch or people watch Okay so if youre just in a do nothing for awhile mood then nature or people watch depending on where you are. Pick a good vantage point and note what happens all around you. Is that couple married or dating? What do you think they do for a living? What can you tell about them from watching? What animals, birds or sea life are common where you are? Are there sharks? Dolphins? Crabs? Squid or other unusual forms of marine life? What fauna frequents the area? What about snakes? I was more than a little surprised to learn from a local resident that feral cats are a big problem in Acapulco. As I paid more attention during my comings and goings in and around the city I noticed they were almost everywhere. They could become especially troublesome at night. These and other imaginative activities can help turn a lay in the sun and burn day at the beach into a much more relaxing, creative or stimulating time for you and the family. Try some of these as an alternative to the usual do nothing day. Prof Larry M. By Kathryn Weber More and more people are looking to gain an edge in their working environments. One method that business people are increasingly turning to is feng shui. Feng shui promises that by arranging your office environment correctly, it is possible to create a better energy in your office, and that energy can promote further opportunity and advancement. In feng shui, there are a few very basic, yet potent, guidelines to creating an effective office environment and that can instantly boost the career quotient of almost any office inhabitant. Although, some offices may require more extensive rearrangement to help promote success, most offices only require a few modest changes. Use these suggestions to help you create your own Power Office. 1. Sit in the power position. This is situated opposite and diagonal from the door or opening to the room. The desk should be here facing the door. Draw more emphasis to this area by creating a focal point with a lamp, artwork, tall plant, etc. This also helps create a straight line of sight to this area, imbuing even more power and authority. Whats more, this corner is also considered the lucky corner of any room so you definitely want your desk there! 2. Sit behind a power desk. A power desk is one that is substantially-sized and correctly placed. A power desk is never an L-shaped desk (the shape of which is like a cleaver or hatchet, and is thought to cut the person sitting at the desk). It also has specific dimensions. Here are dimensions for an auspicious desk (in inches): 75Lx43WX33H or 66-70Lx24-27Wx32-33H Small desks are deemed inauspicious and thwart future growth. 3. Sit in a power chair. A good chair is one with a high back and arm rests (solid, if possible). Although the chairs that are designed for the back are very popular right now, their open weave does not provide good symbolic support for the person occupying them. 4. Put power behind you. Power includes symbols of mountains, banking or business photographs, and your boss. Be sure that your desk does not face your boss desk, but rather, he or she is behind you — even if he or she is on the other side of the building. This also means you should never sit with a window (no support; unless it is a window with a view to a very prominent business or bank), door (no advancement), or bookshelves (backstabbing) behind you. 5. Get power in front of you. Keep the path in front of your desk open and clear. If there are obstructions, such as chairs, etc., the path to a rise in your career will also be obstructed. 6. Activate your desk dragon. Put fresh flowers in the left-hand corner of your desk (as you are sitting at it). Or, place a plant in this corner. This is the dragon side of your desk and it benefits tremendously from the special energy of plants and flowers. Never, ever put bonsai plants in your office, or your career will be stunted and short-lived. Nor should you decorate with cactus, or your career will be riddled with problems and difficult working relationships. Why Elope?

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Mary Casey When I turned forty years old, I decided it was time to get married. Actually, I had been in a serious relationship for over eighteen years, and my fortieth birthday just felt right. But having a traditional white wedding dress and a million relatives just didnt seem like the thing to do at my stage in life. So, we decided to elope. Elopement is a tradition in my family. My grandfather eloped in the nineteen thirties, taking a trip to Niagra Falls with his brother as his witness. Mine had even less people; me, my fianc and the sheriff, along with his secretary who sweetly gave us a copy of the traditional wedding vows in calligraphy on pretty paper. Is elopement for you? What are the advantages of elopement over a traditional wedding? What will you miss out on if you decide to elope? Consider elopement if the following situations fit your life: 1) You are an older bride, and a large ceremony doesnt appeal to you. Or, this isnt your first marriage. 2) You and your husband dont want a religious ceremony. 3) Your husband and you have different religions, and there isnt one singular type of ceremony you can both agree too. 4) Your parents dont agree with your marriage. You are not in a traditional type of relationship. 5) A more creative kind of ceremony tickles your fancy. I know friends who have gotten married in hot air balloons, high above the mountains. Another friend was married on a river boat on the Mississippi. Dont limit yourself to running to Vegas; there are many, many options when you decide to elope. All you need is a justice of the peace and maybe a witness or two, depending on the laws of your state. In my case, all we needed to do was fill out paper work at the local town hall, then arrange for a justice of the peace. I was able to get the city sheriff to do the deed. We were married in the sheriffs office in the fall, with late blooming roses in vases near the windows, and a steady stream of prisoners walking by. How romantic! Actually, it was touching. The sheriff took his job seriously and we did too. Other options where I live is a ceremony in the chapel of the hospital where I work, or even getting married during a fishing trip! Elopement is NOT for you if: 1) You really want the whole dream wedding complete with flowing veil, white wedding gown and cute flower girls. You want to be the princess of the day. 2) You have been collecting Brides magazine for the last ten years. 3) Your family would be heartbroken if there wasnt a party and ceremony that involved them. 4) A religious ceremony is important to you. It is up to you and your future spouse what kind of wedding will suit you both. Elopement could be an option and a fun one at that! If she had to do it again, she would elope!
